The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Witnesses Major Alliance Forged Between TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a significant development ahead of next year's national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Tackle Youth Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and persistent accusations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the Fresh Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that took over after the previous administration was dissolved.

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
